Week 8 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

This week we read the story Pattan’s Pumpkin by Chitra Soundar. The children discussed in their partners what they could see in the picture from the story. We spoke about where the story is set and looked at pictures of India. We discussed how the children would travel to India and looked at different methods of transport we might use to travel there. We looked at a globe and used a torch to represent the sun. We then discussed why India is a hotter country than the United Kingdom. On Friday we acted out the story of Pattan’s Pumpkin and discussed our favourite parts.

On Tuesday we tasted five different foods from around the world. We tasted rice pudding with nutmeg, pineapple, mango, beetroot, and bell peppers. The children had to decide whether they enjoyed the food or did not enjoy the food. They then rated the food using different smiley faces. As a class the children voted for their favourite food they tried. We spoke about where fruit and vegetables come from. We also discussed which fruits grow in hot countries and linked this to our Pattan’s Pumpkin story.

On Wednesday we had a very special visit from two fire fighters. The children enjoyed looking at the fire engine and learning about all the special equipment inside. The firefighters showed us their uniform and answered all our questions we had. We learnt all about fire safety in preparation for Bonfire Night.

On Monday we took part in our Golden Mile challenge. All the children ran around the trim trail and completed two laps. Well done R and Ra!

In phonics, we have revisited the sounds (phonemes) ff, ss, ll and j. We have looked at what sound they make, listening to those sounds in words (orally blending) and trying to read them within words. The children are coming on really well with this and starting to spot these around the classroom too. The children are doing really well at remembering the phonemes and we are working hard to learn how to blend them together. The children learnt the tricky words, put, pull and full.

In our maths lesson on Monday we spoke about positional language. We compared different sizes and discussed what bigger and smaller mean. The children compared themselves in their colour teams. They used the sentence “I am taller than…” to compare their heights. We looked at different teddy bears and decided which one was the tallest and which one was the smallest. On Tuesday we learnt next to, behind, in front of, underneath, and on top of. The class had their own figure to move around their body following the positional language.

We've been practising our handwriting and number formation this week. The children practised creating patterns in pen disco.

This week in P.E we learnt some simple yoga poses.

This week’s VIP has been Amélie. Amélie is a happy and caring member of our class. Amélie enjoys playing in the small school and pretending to be a teacher teaching phonics. She also enjoys drawing and painting in the art area. Well done Amélie!

We will be starting our show and tell next week on Friday. Please use this bag to bring your child’s show and tell into school on Friday morning. This is an opportunity for children to bring in something special to them, it could be a family photograph, a souvenir or a certificate. The children will need to be able to talk about their special item. Please ensure that the item has chosen fits into the bag as we have limited space to store them. Please could your child write their name on the bag. We are happy for the bags to be decorated. Below are the colour teams and the dates for show and tell.

Green team – 10th November

Yellow team – 17th November

Red team – 24th November

Blue team – 1st December

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week.
