Week 6 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

This week we read the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. We took our owl babies out into the woods and build nests for Sarah, Percy and Bill. The children enjoyed searching for sticks and leaves in the woods.

In Phonics, we have learnt the sounds (phonemes) f, h, b and l. We have looked at what sound they make, listening to those sounds in words (orally blending) and trying to read them within words. The children are coming on really well with this and starting to spot these around the classroom too. The children are doing really well at remembering the phonemes and we are working hard to learn how to blend them together. Please see you phonics weekly worksheet for ideas on how to help at home.

We thought it might be useful to provide you with some more information about the books and homework that you will now receive in your child's reading folder each week. Each week, on Thursdays, you will find that you child brings home a book for them to read/ share with you. At this moment in time, the books that have been sent home are 'wordless' books. As you know, we have started our phonics lessons and we will be assessing all the children before half term. After the assessments next week, your child will receive books weekly that correspond to their specific reading level.

In our maths lessons, we have been looking at using five frames. We are becoming subitising superstars, using our fast eyes and we're able to explain how we know a number is made. We have been looking at the composition of 4 on a 5 frame. We spoke about how 4 is one more than 3 and what this looks like on a 5 frame.

We've been practising our zig zag patterns this week with some beach music and pretended to make the shapes using our lightwands. The children loved this and created some excellent wave patterns - all good practice for their letter formation.

In P.E we practised increasing our control over an object. The children practised twisting and turning and reaching and bending. They passed a bean bag around their body. We then practised working in our colour teams to pass the bean bag under our legs and then over our heads.

We also learnt an owl poem this week called "Wise Old Owl" by the Literacy Shed. The children practised reciting the poem as a class and then learnt the actions to go along with it.

On Friday morning we had a Mad Science assembly. The mad scientist taught us all about electricity and energy and how fire is formed. It was very exciting! In the afternoon we learnt about nocturnal animals and what this means. We spoke about lots of different animals that come out at night and why these animals need very good hearing. Our favourite fact was that bats use sonar to hear.  We spoke about the owls from our story and why they come out at night and why need good hearing as well. The children knew some interesting facts about owls and other nocturnal animals which was very impressive!

This week’s VIP has been Penelope. Penelope is a happy and kind member of our class. Penelope particularly enjoys the creative area and drawing pictures of her family! Well done!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the disco tonight and your fantastic party outfits and dance moves! hope you have a lovely weekend and see you next week.
