Week 6 in Class R

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

Hello everyone!

It has been another busy week in Reception this week with lots of indoor and outdoor learning, including a special visitor.

In Literacy this week, the children have looked at the book Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. The children learnt all about the characters Sarah, Percy and Bill and joined in well with the repetition in the book.On Monday afternoon, the class went outdoors to walk in the woods and see how owls might live. We used our senses to look, smell and hear what it is like living in the trees. The children enjoyed retelling the stories by acting it out. This was part of a lesson, but many children have enjoyed choosing to do this during out choosing time too. Later in the week, we have looked at pictures of owls and thought about the words we could use to describe them. The children came up with some great language and we had a discussion between animals that are furry and feathery birds.  On Friday, we spent some time looking at nocturnal animals. We talked about our senses again and learnt how nocturnal animals have super senses to help them to hunt and stay safe in the dark.

In maths, we have focussed on subitising numbers 1, 2 and 3, and we have introduced the number 4 too. We played a game called 3 or not 3 and the children used language to show how they knew it  was 3 or not 3 ( I can see a 2 and a 1/ I can only see 1/ etc). On Friday, We used a 5 frame to make concept images of these numbers. We knew it was 4 because there was one space left on our 5 frame.

On Thursday, we had a fire drill in school. The children were very sensible and evacuated the building quickly and quietly.

In PE, we played games with our partners that allowed us to practise stretching, bending and using our hand and eye coordination to pass a bean bag around our bodies in different directions to our partners.

We have thought a lot about nocturnal animals this week. We have imagined what it is like to be a creature in the dark in the woods. The children learnt about the owls sharp sight and super hearing. We practising being owls and testing out our hearing in the dark. We also learnt that badgers live under ground in setts and that their eyesight isn’t great, but the sense of smell is a lot better than ours, and that they hunt for their food and get around by using their noses.

On Friday, we had an exciting Mad Science assembly. A mad scientist came in to show us all types of energy. We watched how we could power electricity with our bodies, learnt about mixing chemicals to make light and also how we need oxygen to make fire. The scientist taught us that we needed to always have someone who was trained to do these types of experiments, but it was exciting to watch.

Next week, we will be doing our phonics Little Wandle assessments. The results of these will be sent home to you shortly after half term so that you are aware of how they are doing.

We looking at our families throughout the week and talking about how families come in all shapes and sizes. The children will be talking about their families and on Friday, we’ll be drawing a family portrait. To support the children with this and to help discussion, please send a photo of your family in with your child next week by Thursday at the latest.

Friday was an exciting day with the build of the first disco for the children. They had a fab time and showed off their best moves in their party clothes!

Have a great weekend everyone!
