week 23 in Class R

Good afternoon,

It has been a very busy week with school celebrating World Book Day. To celebrate World Book Day we have been reading the story Where My Wellies Take Me by Michael and Clare Morpurgo. The book follows a girl named Pippa who loves the countryside. The book takes the form of a child’s scrapbook created by Pippa  following her day's adventures in the countryside.

On Wednesday, it was an exciting day as we went on our walk to the library. We walked with our buddies and were very sensible walking along the pavement and crossing the road at the traffic lights. At the library, we listened to a story, explored the shelves and shared books with our buddies.

Thursday was World Book Day. We continued our theme of Where My Wellies Take Me' and went on a welly walk with our buddies. The year 6 buddies brought sticks for us to make story sticks, collecting items to tie on to provide memories of their welly walk together and to help the children to recall where the walked and what they found on their route.

On Friday, we read a poem in the story. The poem is called Hurt No Living Thing by Christina Rosetti. We discussed how it is important to look after all living things and even the small creatures. Many children said that they don't like spiders and worms, so we talked about how they are living things too and even if we don't like them, we still should keep them safe.

The children spent some of the afternoon on a bug hunt outside. We explored the big woods on the schoool grounds, turning logs, lifting leaves and found some great creautes: woodlice, spiders, ants, centipedes, slugs and snails. We then wrote a poem in the style of Christina Rosetti.

Hurt no living thing
No spiders with 8 legs
No snails and their curly whirly shell
No slugs with their slimy trail
No woodlice with stripy backs
No centipede in a coil

In maths this week, we are consolidating our understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the numbers within 7. We practised composing and de-composing numbers and investigated part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 7 can be made of 5 and 2. The children deepened their understanding of a whole being made up of smaller parts through games and practical experiences, such as investigating the number of ducks on a pond, using a song 7 little ducks went swimming one day.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend. The children have been busy making Mother's Day cards this week, so we hope you have a lovely relaxing day.
