Week 12

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

Hello everyone!

It has been another busy week in Reception. We have been learning all about cards and why we send them. The children have made their own Christmas card this week. Since we the weather has turned quite chilly, we have looked how the weather has changed going into Winter. The children have enjoyed exploring the frost and ice outside. We investigated why it rains and where does the water come from? We acted out the water cycle and the children pretended to be clouds full of water. On Thursday we learnt the poem “Breezy Weather”. The children acted out the poem and we used instruments to help create the different noises of the weather.

In Phonics, we learnt words ending with s. We learnt the tricky words, we, me and be. Next week, we are completing our Autumn 2 phonics assessments. Those children we did not get 80% on Autumn 1 will be reassessed. Any assessment data will be sent home in the near future.

This week we have continued practicing for our Nativity Christmas play. We are making good progress with this, but please continue to help your child practise their lines at home to help your child feel confident.

In maths this week, the children have build on their understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the composition of 3, 4 and 5. They have practised composing and de-composing numbers and investigated part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 3 can be composed of 1 and 2. The children started to recognise that numbers can be made by combining parts in different ways. We practised sorting a group of 3 children into 2 parts. We also looked the numberblocks episode Stampolines where the characters jumped and stamped out shapes using their bodies in different ways, showing how they were made. We our own Stampolines in lesson and in our table activities, using card pieces and cubes. The children made 4 and 5 in different ways and shared how they had made it, knowin that even if we change how it is made, it is still 4 / 5 as a whole.

On Thursday, we visited our Year 6 buddies in their classroom. They helped us make beautiful angel decorations. It was a fantastic afternoon. We will send home the angel decorations the children made before the Christmas break with some other Christmas crafts!

We have really enjoyed watching everyone’s show and tell this half term. It has been lovely to hear all about the children’s special things from home. There will no more show and tell till after Christmas. We will send out more information about this closer to the time.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week for more Winter/ Christmas fun!
