Week 6 in Reception 2024

We have had a lovely week in Reception, during which the children have continued to take part in many crafts, maths, mark-making, and early writing activities.

This week we have:

  • Listened to our class story ‘Owl Babies’ and learnt all about Owls and what it means to be nocturnal.
  • Explored habitats by taking our class 'Owl Babies' to the school wooded area and discussing why it would make a good home for our Owls.
  • Created our own images of Owls through cutting and sticking.
  • Learnt about night and day, what we do, and how that compares to nocturnal animals.
  • In maths, the children have built on their perceptual subitising (instant recognition) skills, using their 'quick eyes' to recognise numbers up to four in different contexts, shapes, arrangments, and sizes. They have also been working on their conceptual subitising (recognise a whole quantity and what it is made up off) e.g. four is made of two and two more but also three and one more.
  • We have continued learning our new sounds in Phonics. This week we have learnt h, b, f, and l as well as the tricky word 'the'. We have also started reading and writing words containing the sounds we know.
  • Further practiced our mark-making skills through our Letterjoin mark-making activities and by listening to step-by-step instructions to draw our own Owls on whiteboards.
  • Continued to play out on the big playground at lunchtime and during afternoon play, taking part in playtime games, making new friends and meeting up with siblings.

Next week

We will be reading the book 'Pattan's Pumpkin’ and exploring Indian culture

We will be tasting food made from the produce mentioned in our class book (Pattans Pumpkin)

We will be learning about India, where it is, and comparing to where we live.

Homework

There will be food tasting in class next week. If you do not want your child to participate please make sure you get your permission slips back to use as soon as possible. The children will be offered the foods (Mango, Pineapple, Rice pudding with nutmeg, Bell Peppers, and Beetroot) but there is no obligation for them to try them if they do not want to.

Have a great weekend.

From all of the Reception team.
