Week 5 in Reception 2024

We have had a rainy but lovely week in Reception where the children have continued to take part in many crafts, maths, mark making and early writing activities.

This week we have:

  • Listened to our class story ‘A Handful of Buttons’ and talked about who is in our family. We have explored how all families are different and special. We have drawn and written about our own families.
  • Looked at different artists and created our own self-portraits.
  • Learnt about Harvest including learning and performing our harvest song 'big red combine harvester' as well as visiting our school allotment to see how vegetables are grown.
  • In maths the children have explored how numbers can be composed of 1s and investigated th composition of 3 and 4.
  • We have continued learning our new sounds in Phonics. This week we learnt ck,e,u and r. Homework should have come home on Thursday.
  • We talked about and explored how humans grow up and the different stages of growing up.
  • Practised our cutting skills by cutting out the shapes needed to make the outline of a human body. We are continuing to help the children to develop the correct scissor grip (thumb on top, middle and index finger below, scissors still, move the paper).
  • Continued to play out on the big playground at lunchtimes and during afternoon play, taking part in playtime games, making new friends and meeting up with siblings.

Next week

We will be reading the book 'Owl Babies’ and talking about Owls, habitats, food, and flight.

We will be making Owl collages and masks. Retelling the story through whole class role play and puppets.

We will be introducing the concept of night and day, what we do, and how that compares to nocturnal animals.

Homework

Please continue to help your child recognise their written name at home and talk to them about the colour group they are in, as this will really help us in class. We love sharing story at school and encourage you to continue this at home. The children pick and bring a story home each week for you to enjoy together.

We will create a gallery of photos each week and post it on the VLE. If your child does not appear on the photos, it is because we don't have permission from you to post their photo.

Have a great weekend.

From all of the Reception team.
