Week 35 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

This week in Ra we have been learning all about trains again. In Literacy this week we have read “Little Red Train: Busy Day” by Benedict Blathwayt. We have looked at the history of steam trains and compared trains from the past and present. Very specially, we had a visitor come in to tell us all about his job working on the trains! We got to ask all our questions and handle some interesting items that he brought in from the train station.

In Maths this week we have practised using the rekenreks again. The children have also practised counting to 20 and beyond. We collected objects in pairs and arranged them in different ways. Most of the class chose to arrange their 6 objects as a 3 and a 3. However, some chose to arrange them as a 5 and a 1. We then practised using our ‘fast eyes’ and subitising skills to count them.

On Friday we tested out different materials in our science lesson. We looked at how different materials effected a car going down a ramp. We predicted what materials would slow down the car. We also made our own 3D steam train. The children decorated their toilet roll and made a chimney. The children used cotton wool to make the steam for their chimney. We then used cardboard or milk bottle lids for the wheels.

We have practised our races for sports day in P.E this week. The children are very excited for this next week! We have spoken about the Euros again this week and predicted who we think is going to win!

This week’s VIP has been Arlo. Arlo is a polite and popular member of our class! Arlo loves dinosaurs and science. Well done! We enjoyed looking at the blue teams show and tell this week. Next week it will be red group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the red team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we'll see you next week. I look forward to seeing anyone who is coming to the disco tonight!
