Week 35 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week in Ra we have read You Choose by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt. The children really enjoyed discussing what they would choose in the story. The children drew a portrait of themselves this week.

In Literacy this week we have read the story You Choose. The children have discussed what job they would like to do when they are older. We also looked at all different types of jobs and wrote sentences to describe them. We also read the book Titch by Pat Hutchins and asked the children do they know what happens to seeds when they grow? We watched a timelapse video of the seed growing process. The children could see the roots going down into the soil. We wrote the sentence “The roots grow down and the shoots grow up.” I was very impressed with the children’s phonics knowledge and spelling when dictating and writing the sentence.

In Maths this week we have been investigating length and height. At the start of the week we looked at height and how we can measure the height of objects. We also looked at measuring with non-standard units. The children drew around their feet and measured the drawings of their feet using cubes. We could then work out who had the smallest foot in the class and who had the biggest foot in the class. On Thursday we went outside for Maths and threw bean bags in partners. We then used our feet to measure how far our throw was. On Friday we spoke to the children about the height of the tallest sunflower and looked in the Guinness book of records. Using a metre stick and string we measured the string to match the height of the tallest sunflower and explained how we are using the metre stick to measure a large height. We then went outside as a class to show the children how tall it is (using a balloon). We then asked the children if we could measure this with building blocks and decided we would need something bigger to measure it. The sunflower was bigger than the school!

In P.E this week the children continued to practise for sports day. This week we have practised the sprint in our colour teams. The children were fantastic at running as fast as they could to the finish line. As a special treat we all had ice lollies outside after P.E to end the week.

This week’s VIP has been Olivia. Olivia is a kind and caring member of our class. Olivia loves Art and wants to be an artist when she is older. Well done Olivia! We enjoyed looking at the green teams show and tell this week. Next week it will be yellow group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the yellow team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.
