Week 29 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

This week in Ra we have continued reading the book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. The children created their own rainbow fish art. The children used different pieces of coloured paper to create the scales of the Rainbow Fish. They then used oil pastels, pens, and crayons to create a different pattern in each scale. We have used the children’s amazing art work to decorate our classroom! The fish art and writing look fantastic on the walls.

In Literacy this week we wrote sentences to describe the Rainbow Fish. We started the week by generating a class list of fantastic adjectives. The class then wrote their own sentences to describe him. At the end of the week we spoke about the story of the Rainbow Fish and discussed how the Rainbow Fish felt at the end of the story. This linked to the importance of sharing and being a kind friend to others. We have also spoken this week about making mistakes and how we keep on trying and never give up!

In P.E this week the children created different movements to show summer and winter. We practised travelling around the hall safely and learnt how to use different levels in dance.

In Maths this week we have been learning about the composition of 5 and practise recalling the parts of 5 when 1 part is not visible. The children have made arrangements in any way that shows 6 or 7 as ‘5 and a bit’. We asked them to describe what they have done, and show where the 5 can be ‘seen’, as well as identifying whether they were given 6 or 7 counters.

In science this week we have discussed why animals are important and how we can keep them safe. We spoke about the importance of looking after our environment.

In our Understanding of the world sessions, we looked at water pollution, the impact it has on sea creatures and what we can do to help. We read the story ‘Someone swallowed Stanley’ which is all about a plastic bag that ends up in the sea. We found out that there are 5 oceans and linked our learning back to our space topic when we discovered that the oceans nearer the equator are warmer and some sea creatures prefer warmer water and some prefer cool water.

This week’s VIP has been Ronel. Ronel is a popular and kind member of our class. Ronel particularly loves drawing and P.E! Well done! We enjoyed looking at the red team’s show and tell this week.

Next week we are going to be learning all about Tigers. Tuesday 7th will be an Art day, so please send the children into school wearing old clothes. We will be using marker pens, oil pastels, ink and paint, so they are likely to be getting messy!

Have a lovely long weekend, fingers crossed for sunny weather and we’ll see you all on Tuesday.
