Week 29 in Class R
We have had lots of fun this week and it’s been really nice to spend the whole week with the class.
In Literacy, we read The Rainbow Fish and talked about all the words we could use to describe him. We then used the words to write sentences. We also ordered the illustrations to sequence the story, which gave us lots of opportunity to talk about what happened to the characters and how they felt. All the children are trying so hard with their writing and are using all their phonics knowledge to sound out words. They are also becoming more independent when writing in our continuous provision activities. This week we have been labelling sea creatures and completing ‘I spy’ sheets. As we come towards the end of Reception, we are trying to work on our handwriting and finger spaces. We are building in extra fine motor activities to help strengthen those little fingers!
In Maths, we have been learning about composition of number up to 9. The children are working towards instantly recognising amounts, without having to count them and knowing their number facts, such as ‘5 and 1 make 6, 6 is made up of 5 and 1’. At the moment we are concentrating on making 6, 7, 8 and 9 with ‘5 and a bit more’.
In our Understanding of the world sessions, we looked at water pollution, the impact it has on sea creatures and what we can do to help. We read the story ‘Someone swallowed Stanley’ which is all about a plastic bag that ends up in the sea. We found out that there are 5 oceans and linked our learning back to our space topic when we discovered that the oceans nearer the equator are warmer and some sea creatures prefer warmer water and some prefer cool water.
Last week when we learnt about sharks, we found out that sharks have a sixth sense and they use electricity to sense what is around them. This has led to lots of discussions about electricity, so this week we learnt about electric eels and we made a simple circuit to show how electricity is conducted. We also talked about different ways we use electricity and safety.
Next week we are going to be learning all about Tigers. Tuesday 7th will be an Art day, so please send the children into school wearing old clothes. We will be using marker pens, oil pastels, ink and paint, so they are likely to be getting messy!
Have a lovely long weekend, fingers crossed for sunny weather and we’ll see you all on Tuesday.
