Week 23 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

Good afternoon all,

On Thursday it was World Book Day. To celebrate World Book Day we have been reading the story Where My Wellies Take Me by Michael and Clare Morpurgo. Written as a celebration of childhood, the countryside and the part poetry plays in exploring both, the book takes the form of a child’s scrapbook created by Pippa, a young girl whose wellie-clad adventures create the narrative frame for the poems contained within. We journey with Pippa throughout a whole day’s walk in the countryside. This week we have taken part in lots of activities to explore this story and World Book Day.

On Monday we learnt the Magpie rhyme from the story and learnt all about magpies. We learnt where they live and what they eat. We drew a magpie picture as a class. We also had our reading for pleasure session in the afternoon. Thank you to any parents who came along and read the class a story! The children had a lovely time!

In the book “Where My Wellies Take Me, Pippa draws a map to show her journey across the countryside. We explored the concept of map and what maps are used for. We asked the class where they may have seen or used a map before. We then looked at a map of Holmes Chapel and discussed what we could see. The children noticed that the green sections of the map were land and the blue lines were rivers.  We looked at Google Maps and show children the route taken to get to library. We asked the class what sort of things might we see? Animals, buildings, vehicles etc. We then drew our own map to get us to the library.

On Wednesday we visited Holmes Chapel Library with our Year 6 buddies. We had a great time learning all about the library and the books they have. The librarian read us a story about birds which we all enjoyed!

In maths this week, we are consolidating our understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the numbers within 7. We practised composing and de-composing numbers and investigated part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 7 can be made of 5 and 2. The children deepened their understanding of a whole being made up of smaller parts through games and practical experiences, such as investigating the number of ducks on a pond.

On Friday we looked at the poem Hurt No Living Thing by Christina Rossetti. Talk about the descriptions of the insects. We went on an insect hunt around the playground and found lots of ants, worms and even a spider! We wrote a class poem collectively using our descriptions. Our poem was inspired by Christina’s Rossetti. Our class poem is below.

Hurt no living thing:

No ladybird with red wings,

No butterfly with white spots,

No grasshopper with long legs,

No worm so wiggly and thin

Our V.I.P this week has been Alistair. Alistair tries really hard in his reading! Well done! We enjoyed looking at the green teams show and tell this week. Next week it will be red group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the red team bring in their show and tell on Friday morning.

We hope that you have a great weekend!

Miss MacWilliam
