Week 21
Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024
Good afternoon all,
What a great last week of half term we have had: it has been a busy one! This week, we have celebrated Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day and Pancake Day!
The children have spent lots of time learning all about the celebration of Lunar New Year. We have learnt where in the world it is celebrated and learnt that is isn't only celebrated in China, but in lots of places around the world. We looked on Google Earth to see where some of these places are located. The children have learnt that red is a lucky colour and that is why it is used a lot in the celebrations. We practised saying Happy New Year in Mandarin and have looked at how it looks in writing. The children made some good observations when looiking at the writing and were intrigued with the lines and dot patterns. We tried to recreate these ourselves too. We discussed what foods are eaten in the celebration and compared them to the types of food that we eat at times of celebration. Ono Thursday, the children watched a dragon and lion dance that are traditionally performed during Lunar New Year and we listened to some of the music that is played alongside it. In the afternoon, we performed our own dragon dance and created music to go with it. The children had a great time in the hall pretending to be dragons.
On Tuesday, Mrs Noble talked to the children about Pancake day and based some writing about it for their books. The have also completed some independent writing on dragons that you will be able to see on Parents' evening.
On Wednesday, we talked about the significance of Valentine's day. We loved creating our own collage love hearts to bring home to give to someone that we love.
Thank you so much for bringing in your child's space challenge work! We have loved seeing their creations and hearing about how they made them. They are fantastic!
We hope that you all have a wonderful half term. Please see the main Reception page for dates of Show and Tell and any other events happening in the next half term.
Have a brilliant holiday and we will see you all in the next half term!
