Week 19 Class Ra
Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024
Good afternoon everyone,
This week we have continued our topic ‘Space and Sky’. We have read “How to Catch a Star” by Oliver Jeffers. We have learnt all about stars this week and explored what they look like.
In Literacy this week we designed an invention to catch a star. We thought about how our invention would work and how we would make it. We had lots of fantastic ideas. We also retold the story “How to Catch a Star” and spoke about what happened at the start of the story and the end. We discussed why the boy might have wanted to catch a star and what the children would do with a star. The children used their phonics to write: “I will get the star at night.”
In Art this week we looked at Starry Night by Van Gogh. We asked the children what they thought about it. We discussed how it makes them feel, what it is painted with etc. We then tried to create our own Starry Night picture using small strokes of our pen.
In Maths this week we have looked at more than and fewer than. The children have worked together to discuss what set of objects have more and what set of objects have less. We discussed how the size, colour and type of object does not affect the number of objects.
We started our P.E lesson by pretending to jump as different animals. We then created our own sequence with a star jump, log roll and egg roll. We practised putting the three different moves together to create a sequence. We learnt to be aware of the position of others before rolling. We went over how to perform rolls safely and revisited a forward roll. I was very impressed with how safely the children performed their rolls. Well done Ra!
On Friday we went to Jodrell Bank for our school trip. We learnt all about the Moon, the Earth, the Sun, and objects that reflect or make their own light, in their Space Dome. We got to explore the grounds, visit the museum and interact with all their activities. We particularly enjoyed looking at how the planets revolve around the sun and making our space helmet. I was very impressed with the children’s behaviour and engagement with the speakers. Thank you to those parents who volunteered to help and those who came along on the day. It was grateful appreciated!
Our V.I.P this week has been Eddie. Eddie’s favourite part of school is P.E. Well done Eddie!
Due to the trip we were unable to do the yellow teams show and tell this week. Please could the yellow team bring their show and tells bag next week instead. Thank you!
Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week!
