Week 12 in Class Ra
Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024
Hello everyone!
It has been another busy week in Reception. We have been learning all about cards and why we send them. The children have made their own Christmas card this week. We also looked at weather and how the weather has changed going into Winter.
In Phonics we learnt words ending with s. We learnt the tricky words, we, me and be. Next week we are completing our Autumn 2 phonics assessments. Those children we did not get 80% on Autumn 1 will be reassessed.
In Literacy this week, we have been looking at Christmas cards and weather. We spoke about why we send cards and when we send them. We looked at the weather in Autumn and how this changes moving into winter. I have asked the children to comment on the weather every morning and we have looked at our weather chart and moved the arrow to mirror the weather for that day. We investigated why it rains and where does the water come from? We acted out the water cycle and the children pretended to be clouds full of water. On Thursday we learnt the poem “Breezy Weather”. The children acted out the poem and we used instruments to help create the different noises of the weather.
This week we have continued practicing for our Nativity Christmas play. Please continue to help your child practice their lines at home.
In maths this week, the children have build on their understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the composition of 3, 4 and 5. They have practised composing and de-composing numbers and investigated part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 3 can be composed of 1 and 2. The children started to recognise that numbers can be made by combining parts in different ways. We practised sorting a group of 3 children into 2 parts. We also looked a Stampolines and making our Stampoline using the number 4. Each child had 4 cubes and had to make their own Stampoline. We looked at all the different ways this could be done and I was very impressed with all their ideas. We spoke about how we still have 4 cubes as a whole. The children made up their own numberblock out of 3 and then wrote a number sentence to go with their numberblock of 3, e.g. 2 + 1 = 3.
On Thursday we visited our Year 6 buddies in their classroom. They helped us make beautiful angel decorations. It was a fantastic afternoon. We will send home the angel decorations the children made before the Christmas break with some other Christmas crafts.
In PE we learnt some Christmas yoga poses and practised putting two poses together. I was very impressed with the children’s balancing whilst standing on one leg.
This week’s VIP has been Luke. Luke is a sensible and friendly member of our class. He loves dinosaurs and has tried really hard with his reading this week. Well done Luke! We enjoyed looking at the blue teams show and tell this week. Next week it will be blue group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the red team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.
We have really enjoyed watching everyone’s show and tells. It has been lovely to hear all about the children’s special things from home. There will no more show and tell till after Christmas.
On Friday we had a very special visitor arrive in her classroom… Freddy the elf. Freddy brought us an advent calendar to count down the days to Christmas. We look forward to seeing what mischief Freddy gets up to over the next few weeks in our class.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week for more Christmas fun!
